Rob Cowan – urban designer, writer, editor, speaker, cartoonist, illustrator and lexicographer. From 2000 to 2007 Rob was the first director of the Urban Design Group, and since 2007 a director of the consultancy Urban Design Skills.
Laura Alvarez – PhD, Senior Principal Urban Design and Conservation Officer at Nottingham City Council, and Urban Design Group East Midlands. With an impressive range of experience and knowledge behind her, Laura’s many interests include sustainable, collaborative urban design. Her focus is at the heart of this program, where the goal is to understand how to make urban design safe, sustainable, and people-centred.
Tim Gill is an independent scholar, writer and consultant on childhood, and a global advocate for children’s play and mobility. He is the author of Urban Playground: How child-friendly urban planning and design can save cities and No Fear: Growing up in a risk averse society.
Tim is an Ambassador for the Design Council, the UK’s design champion. He is a former director of the Children’s Play Council (now Play England). His work cuts across public policy, education, child care, planning, transport, urban design and playwork. It engages with academics, practitioners, policy makers, the media and the wider public.
Cany Ash is a co-founder of Ash Sakula Architects, one of the UK’s leading housing and regeneration architects. The practice was Supreme Winner in the 2016 Housing Design Award for the Malings, a new riverside neighbourhood in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Claire Harper is a founding partner of Harper Perry Architects, with a particular interest in the design and procurement of new housing. Claire has previously worked for architectural practices in The Netherlands, and London, is an experience tutor in architecture and design, teaching for six years at the University of Westminster, and currently is a Lecturer at Newcastle University.
James Perry is an architect and planner who co-founded Harper Perry in 2015. He has worked across the fields of major housing, strategy, urban design and policy. James has delivered a range of authority-wide design codes, to investment and delivery plans for future high streets and supporting local authorities deliver new planning policy.
Prior to founding Harper Perry he worked on a range of urban housing projects including Kings Crescent, Hackney and Plaistow Village, later working for Levit Bernstein as part of their major housing team. James is a founding director of Newcastle Contemporary Art and plays an active role in promoting arts and culture in the region
Michael Jones is manager of City of York Council’s Housing Delivery Programme where he is setting ever-higher benchmarks in housing design and zero-carbon homes.
Dr Ian Morton – Lecturer in planning and development. His main focus is the role of public spaces in the life of the city, a topic we’ll deal with in depth during this course.
Rob Beardsworth – Urban Design Works Founder with over 15 years of experience in urban design and creator of this course. His experience in both local and national urban design roles with the cities of York and Hull, and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) makes him a great analyst of urban design projects big and small. His focus in creating people-centric developments was at the heart of the creation of this program.
