
Free Urban Design Course Description
This is a pre-recorded online course introducing the role of urban design and how it relates to other built environment professions. It covers the importance of urban design working across different spatial scales, and explains the basic elements of urban form and how this contributes to the distinctive character of places. It uses a number of recent developments to demonstrate the essentials of well-designed places.
Is It For Me?
This course is for anyone with an interest in learning about the need for, and fundamentals of urban design. It is for professionals, politicians, students and prospective students.
What Will I Learn?
- An introduction to the different scales of urban design.
- An understanding of the basic elements of urban form: development blocks, streets, buildings, open spaces and landscape, and how the relationship between these basic elements can, and has, determined different contexts over time.
- Learn the meaning of different terminologies used in urban design practice.
- Learn the importance of the essentials of urban design: to integrate-well; to support life to work with the landscape; to have an identity; and to sustain over time.
Who Created The Course?


The course was created by Urban Design Works founder Rob Beardsworth.
Rob is a Recognised Practitioner in Urban Design with the Urban Design Group, Design Champion for the RTPI, and alumni of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, as well as the School of Architecture and Cities at the University of Westminster.
He created this course to introduce Urban Design Works, to explain some of the fundamentals of urban design, and to champion the role of design in the built environment.
Several recent developments feature in the course to demonstrate the design qualities we believe are essential in well-designed places.
