Foundation Certificate in Urban Design (September 9-11 2024)
Course Description
The Foundation Certificate in Urban Design is studied on-location in Newcastle-upon-Tyne over three days. The course comprises a series of lectures, site visits and practical design exercises that will expand your knowledge of urban design theories and principles, and how to apply them in practice. It will help you grow your own design skills, develop your eye for design detail, and improve your ability to recognise the intrinsic worth of good design both in the field, and in plans and drawings.

This course has been designed for built environment professionals at any stage in their careers, as well as anyone aspiring to develop their understanding, knowledge and skills in urban design.

What Will I Learn?
- The Urban Design scale and the fundamentals of Urban Design.
- National and local design policy, guidance, tools and technique including design coding.
- Learn about the most influential concepts and theories in Urban Design.
- Develop your knowledge of the elements of urban form: buildings, streets and spaces and landscape, and why these are important to urban structure.
- The importance of being able to properly appraise and appreciate context.
- Learn about the importance of legibility analysis, and how to use it in the design of new development.
- Developing movement frameworks and hierarchy of spaces.
- Learn methods for developing three-dimensional site proposals through appropriate densities, scale, massing and form.
- Develop your knowledge of the characteristics of successful public spaces.
- Learn how to better identify and understand what is distinctive or special about a place – its character, and how this understanding can be applied to the design of new development.
- Practical exercises in site context appraisals, and how to capture and record the attributes (character) of place.
- Site study visits of existing developments to develop an appreciation of successfully integrating new development in different contexts.
- How to better appraise design quality in plans and drawings, and help to ensure the delivery of well-designed place: buildings, streets and spaces.
Will I Receive A Certification?
Those who have successfully completed the course will receive a Foundation Certificate in Urban Design (CPD) affiliated with the Urban Design Group.
Who Delivers The Course?
The course is led by Urban Design Worka founder Rob Beardsworth. Rob is a Recognised Practitioner in Urban Design with the Urban Design Group, Design Champion for the RTPI, and alumni of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, as well as the School of Architecture and Cities at the University of Westminster.
The course will be co-presented with leading urban design experts, architects and other specialists from professional practice and academia. Delegates participate in a range of lectures, site-based and practical learning.
